Defining Intelligence
By intelligence I think that we mean the ability to improve the quality of our private awareness and the effectiveness in the public realization of our motives. The two aspects are a virtuous feedback loop, so the better we can interpret our experiences (the more sense we can make out of what we sense), the better we can identify and optimize our opportunities to create what we want to experience.
Without private awareness or motivation, there is no intelligence. Nothing cares whether it is improving or not. A mechanism can be programmed to optimize a behavior, just as a fishing net can be made in a way to catch more kinds of fish, but the net itself is not fishing and its success or failure can’t make any difference to it.
